This is my very first “blog” as the managing director of Negocio Resolutions. I am excited about the birth of Negocio which will be working with clients to apply ADR principles in a business setting to create exceptional outcomes that are fair and just.
We are experts at communication, innovation, collaboration, negotiation, facilitation, mediation and education. I have been working with conflict and dispute all my life, first as a lawyer and now as a mediator, arbitrator, consultant and negotiator.
Thoughts about conflict.
While sometimes we cannot control whether conflict occurs in organisations (or in our lives) we can change our responses. Some people think that the negative impacts of conflict “happens to them” like an earthquake or tsunami. Yet the impact of conflict is not a matter of chance or luck.
You can get assistance with conflict to manage its impact as well as learn more about your own reactions and how you can manage them to achieve positive outcomes.
Well managed conflict is a source of learning, change and strength.
Conflict sometimes occurs when someone (or many people) believe that they are not being treated fairly either in the distribution of resources or in relation to their ideals or values. At its extreme, conflict leads to oppression and violence.
And yet most human beings loath violence (and destructive conflict). I also know that most share many values….dignity, respect, the right to self-determination and integrity. Yet even with those shared values disagreements seem to occur every day for everyone.
So what can you do to manage conflict more effectively and to extract the value is offers while minimising the downside risk? That is the business of Negocio Resolutions. We live and breathe conflict management. Negocio consultants mediate, negotiate, communicate, innovate and educate every day with a very straightforward vision in mind…..
Negocio’s clients have positive working relationships, manage conflict effectively and achieve best practice in decision making. Negocio supports clients to treat others with respect and to value diversity. We are rigorous in addressing issues when we negotiate, mediate and facilitate. In ADR Negocio supports clients to achieve fair and just outcomes that address their interests and needs.
How can you help yourself? That will be the subject of future posts, as well as the latest news and views about conflict in organisations, mediation, communication and ADR that we will bring you on this page.
One tip for today
When faced with conflict, resist the temptation to frame the problem with blame, or to fall into the trap of deciding that someone must be at fault when conflict causes you pain or distress. That is not always the case. There are many, many, reasons for conflict and the least likely is that other people are “bad”. I practice mediation every day. More often than not at least one side paints the other as evil and yet from my observation there is rarely a devil in the room. More likely than lying is misunderstanding. More often people are misunderstood than manipulative, most likely the “other” has friends, family, loves and hates just like you.
If you want to resolve conflict take the time first to understand others and how they see the world. I can guarantee you will have a better prospect of finding a useful outcome.
I am not suggesting that you suspend all judgements or ignore bad behaviour. Just that you take your time to listen carefully so as to understand others before you judge.
Thanks so much for your interest in my work and the business of Negocio Resolutions.
